Wow we have had the most fantastic World Book Day!! The staff and children dressed up as some of their favourite book characters and have had an absolute blast celebrating books, stories and poems. We read stories throughout each day but today was extra special, we read stories, we listened to audio books, we acted them out and made up our own. It was a day of literacy heaven. The staff all chose to dress up as characters for their rooms book of the month and we decorated the rooms to suit the books. The babies and toddlers were characters from ‘That’s not my’ books, Nursery ‘Dear Zoo’ and Pre-school were characters from ‘Night Pirates’ and had their very own plank to walk. We had a funny moment when we realised that Elaine dressed as a cheetah and Hayley as a dog looked like Cruella Devil and a Dalmatian they were costumes that kept on giving. Management were not exempt Ruth was the witch from ‘Room on the Broom’ and Megan ‘Winnie the Pooh’. We at First Steps are big advocates for reading as we see the benefit it makes to a child’s development and we were recently astonished to discover that a child that has one story read to them daily hears 1.5 million more words in their first three years than a child that doesn’t. We also see the advantages to a child’s imagination and therefore extends their play and development. We want to say a huge thank you to all of our First Steps families not just for dressing up but for sharing your favourite books with us. It has been a truly magical day.
